27.09.19 - ‘Until kingdom come’, there is Magic in Buxted CEP School?!!

A rainy Friday in no way dampened this amazing group of imaginative club children, as ALL NEW ‘Magical Kingdoms’ were revealed throughout the school grounds.

Look out for the 🦄 Unicorn 🦄 kingdom and the food larder lift!

At one point the heavens truly opened (with rain) but with mild temperatures, not one child ran for shelter, favouring the completion of their Magical Kingdoms. Such a great barometer for what Mother Nature can inspire within children. Yet again all the instructor and volunteer helper team had as much fun as the children!! Look 👀 out for a gripping video recall of some of Buxted’s Magical Kingdoms. Well done Buxted.

26.09.19 - It’s a 🖐 HIGH FIVE 🖐 for 🍎 Apple Pressing 🍏 at Parkside CP school club....

...by five, we mean, to take a humble 🍏 and extract just it’s delicious juice, there are five processes the club children partake in!

1. Wash the apples 2. Slice the apples (with one action apple slicers), 3. Crush the apples to produce pulp (using traditional turn handle fruit crushers), 4. Load the pulp to the traditional press and finally but most favourite the high 5. Pressing the pulp to extract the freshest juice you’ll ever taste!

Did they do it? Ohhh my, they did so well and performed each task safely and efficiently, ensuring there was lots of absolutely delicious juice to go round to quench both the clubbers and parents thirst!

Here at The Great Out-tours, we are always aiming to differentiate the learning outcomes for all the 6 year groups that partake in our activities. During this session, a year 5 and two year 6 pupils were given training on how to operate ‘hand over hand’ Apple slicing with the youngest club children. They attentively listened and then took to task, helping the littlies, safely slice apples. They were ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT and such was the G.O.T’s team’s admiration, Farmer John spoke to the school head and they duly received certificates for their efforts at the weekly all school assembly.

BRAVO to the three and fantastic to all the club children, ensuring this seasonal harvest highlight, was enjoyed by one and all!

25.09.19 - The Magical Kingdoms of Dallington?!

Since it’s launch earlier this year, ‘Magical Kingdoms’ has shot into the top five of this special club’s favourites. The children regularly ask to do this one again, so we gave them what they wanted, and myyy what imagination prevailed!

To recall the activity, in pairs or three’s the children are given an ornate tiny wooden door and with this, they find a nook/tree root hole, a grassy tussock or bough of a tree, to create their magical kingdom. Then using nature forage finds (in this case lots of colourful pink/orange spindle berries, hazel nut cases & shells, acorn cups) & their incredible imagination, they create a story around their door.

If you have not already done so, for a true heartbeat of how well the children did/enjoyed this activity, check out our last 25.09.19 FB video post. There are OSCAR achievements in there; a MUST SEE!

We so love running this activity too, as it brings everyone’s childhood memories alive. BIG KIDS AT HEART 💔 😆 Enjoy this very special gallery as Dallington CEP school grounds came alive with MAGICAL KINGDOMS!

23.09.19 - A ‘Efty’ catch brings delight to Rocks Park

Rocks Park have a wonderful pond that was lovingly restored by a parent in summer 2018. We ran a spring 2019 pond dip with our club and found many Smooth Newt adults.

Today we ran an Autumn Pond Dip to see what might be getting ready for winter ‘down under’!

The children found several Ramshorn Snails, wiggly Diving Beetles, Freshwater Shrimp and.........

......squeals of delight as EFT after EFT after EFT were found (just as club children had found the Friday previous at a school 10 minutes down the road),

What is an EFT? This is the name of a juvenile newt, and the Rocks Park one’s were young Smooth Newts.

Where are the adult newts you may ask?

Well, they have likely left the pond inhabiting Rocks Park woodland, pastures AND YOUR GARDENS, hunting food (never too far away from their breeding pond). They’ll also be looking for places to hibernate for the winter.

This clearly shows that in pond habitats across our club schools, there is a seasonal flow of nature in action now!

THIS IS WHY THE GREAT OUT-TOURS EXISTS, TO INSPIRE CHILDREN TO FORM A PASSION FOR OUR COUNTRYSIDE AND HOPEFULLY WANT TO CARE FOR & SUSTAIN IT.

Now this is where you all can help to fire your child(REN)’s love for nature in your own back gardens. Newts favour garden log piles, under your rockery stones, under a shed or within your compost heap; a place that keeps them free of frost. 20.09.19 - Look eft, look right, look eft again?..!

We have been delivering our after school club at Buxted CEPS for SEVEN consecutive years with the register full or near enough to! This year the popularity of our club has soared to all time heights! Thanks to the school management team, we opened up extra places to enable more children to be inspired by the flows of our countryside. We are so proud to say there are clutches of children from all six year groups,
embracing the wonders of the great out-doors this term!

Our first club session returned to the school pond for an autumn dip to see what minibeasties are getting set for winter! In groups the children scooped with their nets and excitedly deposited their catches to dipping trays! They found a corker of a Great Pond Snail, several Pond Leeches (don’t worry they are vegetarian plant eaters not blood suckers) and a huge Blue Darter nymph!

Then....... squeals of delight as EFT after EFT after EFT were found?? What is an EFT? This is the name of a juvenile newt, and the Buxted one’s were young Smooth Newts.

Where are the adults you may ask?

Well, they have likely left the pond inhabiting woodland, pastures AND YOUR GARDENS, hunting food (never too far away from their breeding pond). 19.09.19 - Hearts of gold fall for something very special?

A hearty flush of new young faces warmed our souls as the gates on a new Parkside CPS club year opened!

It was a perfect day of sunshine for our club and what better a way to welcome the children, than with an autumnal pond dip.

Now let’s recall the last Parkside pond dip which took place in Spring. We netted a Wealden area CLUBS RECORD catch of mature Smooth & Palmate Newts. A memorable hour for both clubbers and instructors alike!

Would this magical pond habitat reveal more of the same? No, not one newt netted this time but this is the thrill of pond habitats, they change throughout a calendar year, with creatures packing their bags and leaving for a season before returning when reproduction calls. This is exactly why we revisit these ‘chameleon changing’ habitats to inspire in children the magical ‘ebbs and flows’ of Mother Nature.

This pond dip observed very murky water but with patience to wait until the sediment settled, there were hoots of wild excitement as the unmistakable rich orange of a goldfish was revealed!! Not a native of our wild ponds, but a great catch all the same that warmed the hearts of the enthusiastic clubbers. A good star 🌟 to all the Parkside dippers.

18.09.19 - In the back of the net....... at a Snail’s pace???!!

A flush of young nature loving Key Stage 1 children have joined our club to soak up the wonders of The Great Out-tours. We are delighted they have joined this loyal and team centred club group.

Our new academic school club year kicked off at Dallington CEPS, on a gorgeous sunny afternoon with an Autumn pond dip.

Recalling our spring pond dip session, we found many Horsehair Worms, Freshwater Shrimp and a Smooth Newt. After a long summer of very little rain what would we find within the depths of this healthy micro habitat. Indeed would there be any water at all?

With nervous anticipation the children parted the long reeds to find, 💦 WATER 💦; not a lot but a little! What minibeasties would they find?

Well this dip was all about snails, the Great Pond Snail and the Ramshorn Snail. The children studiously searched their dip trays and 🐌 snails 🐌 were the star this time.

This is the thrill of pond habitats. The minibeasties are never always the same; always transient with something new providing excitement. Check out these lovely pics of children totally absorbed in their netting endeavours. WELL DONE DALLINGTON!

A tiny wooden door and an illuminating introduction from Farmer John is all the children needed to spark this new academic school club year into Great Out-tours life. In pairs the children took up their wooden door and fastidiously explored & foraged the school grounds to create THEIR VERY SPECIAL magical kingdom. 11.09.19 - Tic-toc!!! COUNTDOWN to our first Dallington CEPS after school club of Term 1 2019 is on.

**IMPORTANT UPDATE** A NEW SCHOOL YEAR BRINGS A NEW SCHOOL CLUB RUN DAY at DALLINGTON CEPS.

Due to a heavily congested offering of Thursday clubs across our Sussex network, following close discussion with School Head - Paul Cox, we have made the difficult decision to move our longstanding Thursday slot, TO A WEDNESDAY after school.

We sincerely hope this change will not adversely affect our existing, loyal & valued club children's attendance to our club. Inversely we hope the new day will bring in some new faces (friends of your children), that previously could not attend the Thursday!

**A school club letter will be coming to you shortly reflecting this change.**

We start back on Wednesday 18th September 2019 and what a line up we have in store....

A BUMPER HARVEST means APPLE PRESSING! ...PLAYFUL KIDS means PYGMY GOATS,
...A SPRING IN THE STEP means BUNNIES - all coming to your school club in term 1/2 2019?

- One of our club year's ALL TIME FAVOURITE'S IS BACK; Apple pressing using traditional methods & equipment to make the very freshest apple juice for club children/parents/carers to taste together!

- Our characterful/friendly Pygmy Goats will be 'trit-trotting' across The Great Out-tours bridge to come in & see your children!!

- ALL NEW amazing 'make & take' seasonal craft.

- Our wild rescue COMMON BUZZARD will be coming in to school for your children / you to marvel at!!! We do stress this feature will be entirely reliant on the welfare of the treasured bird.

- An Autumn pond dip to see what is settling in for an aqua-winter!

- Our ever so friendly Bunny rabbits of varying breeds will be coming in for a snuggle (subject of course to their welfare).

- All new outdoor wild games & scavenger hunts to develop team work skills, self esteem and mental wellbeing.

We expect club numbers to be large so we recommend you book up your child(ren) sooner rather than later.
