After Schools Clubs in Wealden

The great out-tours bring the wonders of the countryside to the doorstep of primary school children. Via an exciting & curriculum supporting ‘four seasons’ outdoor learning programme, we deliver after school clubs & in-school workshops.

We pride ourselves in creating unforgettable practical experiences of nature in action using the school grounds/surrounds as the teaching ‘stage’. We work closely with the school staff to satisfy key curriculum learning objectives in the subject areas of: science, geography, art & design, music & design & technology. If your school has a Great Out-tours club running, here is a taster of what your children will take part in…

  • Living animal dynamics, including handling/bottle feeding lambs & chicks in spring.
  • Wild produce culinary activities including making Elderflower cordial, Crab Apple jelly, jams & chutneys & crushing/pressing fruits in summer for the freshest juice.
  • Carrying out a variety of countryside surveying methods on nature (with the aid of long duration cameras to bring alive the wildlife whilst school sleeps)!
  • Rural crafts making animal/plant structures/sculptures as well as bird, bat & insect nest boxes, homes & hotels!
  • Exciting individual & team-work based activities to develop self esteem, confidence, independence & practical skills. … plus many other illuminating & fun activities!

21.04.19 - HAPPY BLEASTER!!!!!!!

Farmer John has been really busy this Easter hols bringing new life to Woodside Environmental Education Centre; four of the cutest lambs; Bruno (from Dorset), Nell (from Sussex with a dose of Dutch), Marble (from East Anglia with a dose of South Down Sussex) & ???? (a female lamb from the South Downs with a dose of French/Dutch)!!! The last lovely lamb has not been named and we need your help to name her.

Replies please on Easter Day to really start off your Spring Sunny Day with extra joy from our farming countryside!!!

This is possibly our most diverse European mix of lambs since we started bringing lambs to school across our Wealden and West Sussex club network (over 7 years ago).

They each have extremely interesting stories & all have such lovely calm personalities THAT YOUR CHILDREN AT CLUBS WILL GET TO MEET, FEED AND LEARN ABOUT!

Some of you may know but very sadly the educational farm in our region -'Seven Sisters Sheep Centre', that used to run lamb visits for all ages, closed last year. We are told that we are unique in our provision of lamb based curriculum supporting school visits.

We break down all the H&S barriers to ensure children at schools get to marvel, feed and pet these quintessential icons of Spring. THIS IS A TRULY UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE FOR CHILDREN!

Our school club registers are now live so if you have not done so already, please re-enrol/enrol your child(ren) by clicking on thegreatout-tours.com/find-a-club/

Our four newest animal friends and The Great Out-tours team cannot wait to see you all in this SPRING HIGHLIGHT TERM 5.

22.03.19 - “Pee-yow”. Can you hear ‘Buzzted’ ??

Well your children met him! Cryptic introduction this one, but we felt your Easter hols needed a post of soaring proportions to make you feel extra happy!

Drum roll......Buzz is a wild rescue male Common Buzzard lovingly looked after and brought back to good health by one of our amazing team, Laura. In term 1 2018, he went on Great Out-tours to all our Wealden club schools. His reception was overwhelming and the mesmerised children learnt oodles of amazing facts about this master of our skies.

Such was his popularity, we decided to roll out more tour dates in term 4 2019!! SELL OUT once more!!

Now we can tell you but there were many behind the scenes butterflies from his ‘road crew’, as he very nearly did not make the club stage, due to a windy spell of weather in March. This made him very unsettled ‘on glove hand’. Thanks to Mother Nature, the windy fronts subsided and Buzz settled back into his calm demeanour and 😁 HOORAY 😃 , he transfixed the Buxted CEP after school club children!!

There was a whole new learning journey introduced for this session with a ‘Buzz’word search and a dot-to-dot challenge. The children loved these new quizzes and learnt loads about this magnificent bird of prey.

Here’s one to ask your children once you’ve read this text: what has Buzz and a 🎢 rollercoaster 🎢 got in common?

BE SURE to view this compelling picture gallery of the Buzz 22 March 2019 GREAT OUT-TOUR date.

01.04.19 - To all you very dear Rocks Park PS club Mother’s, Grannies & Carers; we hope you enjoyed your very special Sunday and the gift your children so lovingly crafted at club.

Heart jars for pens, pencils or a tea light.

The ingredients used. A sterilised jar, scissors, paint, sticky back plastic and colour tissue.

Our team had a VERY BIG dilemma when Buzz, our wild rescue Common Buzzard had a tricky week ‘on glove’, so for safety reasons, we had no option but to place his Rocks Park visit to ‘Mother’s Day gift make week’. We are 😐 SO SORRY 😐 mum’s as this meant your very special Mother’s Day gifts arrived a day late. Consider them perhaps an Easter gift from your beloved children! We trust you understand our difficult decision made, to ensure your children got to share an unforgettable hour with Buzz.

Following a ‘how to make’ introduction, in ☀️ sun ☀️ drenched spring conditions, we could not have imagined how magical the atmosphere that ensued. A quiet hum of loving focus absorbed the children as they thrust their caring energy into making your very special 🎁 gifts!

Unaided every child carefully cut out their sticky back plastic heart templates, stuck them to their jars, painted around & applied the finishing touches!

Mum’s, don’t miss these gorgeous sunny ☀️ pics☀️ to enjoy the very special moments that created your Mother’s Day / Easter gifts. ENJOY THEM!

29.03.19 - To all you very dear Buxted Mother’s, Grannies & Carers; we hope you enjoyed your very special Sunday and the gift your children so lovingly crafted at club.

Heart jars for pens, pencils or a tea light.

The ingredients used. A sterilised jar, paint, sticky back plastic, decorative twine & a Great Out-tours gift label!

Our team had a dilemma to how we could dry the painty/gluey jars without a power point for our hairdryers! Well Mother Nature allayed our worries with a super sunny 🌞 and warm club hour!

We placed the crafting tables in the full sunlight and hey presto, ‘nature’s salon’ did the drying!!

Heart jars for pens, pencils or a tea light.

The ingredients used. A sterilised jar, paint, sticky back plastic, decorative twine & a Great Out-tours gift label!

Following a ‘how to make’ introduction, we were thrilled with the care and creative zeal of this talented group of crafters. A palpable blanket of silence descended on the crafting tables as the sticky back plastic heart templates were carefully cut out, stuck to their jars and then painted around.
