After Schools Clubs in Wealden

The great out-tours bring the wonders of the countryside to the doorstep of primary school children. Via an exciting & curriculum supporting ‘four seasons’ outdoor learning programme, we deliver after school clubs & in-school workshops.

We pride ourselves in creating unforgettable practical experiences of nature in action using the school grounds/surrounds as the teaching ‘stage’. We work closely with the school staff to satisfy key curriculum learning objectives in the subject areas of: science, geography, art & design, music & design & technology. If your school has a Great Out-tours club running, here is a taster of what your children will take part in…

  • Living animal dynamics, including handling/bottle feeding lambs & chicks in spring.
  • Wild produce culinary activities including making Elderflower cordial, Crab Apple jelly, jams & chutneys & crushing/pressing fruits in summer for the freshest juice.
  • Carrying out a variety of countryside surveying methods on nature (with the aid of long duration cameras to bring alive the wildlife whilst school sleeps)!
  • Rural crafts making animal/plant structures/sculptures as well as bird, bat & insect nest boxes, homes & hotels!
  • Exciting individual & team-work based activities to develop self esteem, confidence, independence & practical skills. … plus many other illuminating & fun activities!

08.11.19 - 🎥 Mother Nature’s magical Autumn colour palette is scooped up and turned into kaleidoscope ‘NATURE PIE’S’ by our Buxted CEPS club artists! 🎥

The grounds of this school are truly resplendent in a rainbow of forage colour and just 👀 look how the children used the fall treasures as ingredients to make their ‘Nature Pies’.

So who would benefit from these culinary delights? No edible slices for the pupils but MANY rich pickings for the diverse community of wild birds, mammals & insects that reside within/adjoining the school grounds and SO need our help as the cold weather diminishes their food supply. Not just a creative Autumnal forage but a WIN WIN ecosystem supporting activity. 👍 👍 Absolutely brilliant Buxted CEPS and so enjoyable to be part of.

A message from The Great Out-tours team: why not make your very own Nature Pie to help sustain creatures during the cold months in your own home gardens.

07.11.19 - There’s only one way to hone the free spirits of children following a half term week off school........an all ‘CONKERING’ wild ‘Winter Stick Olympics’! Te he he. 🤣🤩

We specialise in making learning wildly ‘fun in the mud’ and there is some excellent numeracy on display here out in the great out-doors. Each of the three teams partook in three wildwood themed Olympic events: Willow Javelin, The Conker Roll Challenge & Eye-Conker Basketball!!!?? 🤪🤩

Each team had score recorders (look out for them holding clipboards), who led their groups masterfully to count up their points achievements. No calculators and rulers here, just fast paper based arithmetic. The final winners were euphoric......as were the instructor team seeing such happy children.

Absolutely superb Parkside CPS clubbers. We salute 👏you.👏

23.10.19 - Goatally hilarious 😂 😂 😂 times were had as our Autumn ‘Great Out-Goat tours’ commenced with a sell out at Dallington CEPS!

The feature pic with this post is a cracker and what were these fantastic children laughing at you may ask? 😗🤗

Welll Rupert, our friendliest ever Pygmy (who has visited and been lovingly petted by over 1000 children) is a chatty soul and was quite literally talking to the children as he was introduced! 😆🤣😂 He has a talent like no other goat we have!!

Farmer John also brought along Nigella (Rupert’s mother) and his two twin siblings, Betsy and George.

This is a rural school and the children are so passionate about all things outdoors. They listened attentively as many fascinating facts were shared by Farmer John about Pygmy Goats.

They will tell you...

Pygmy Goats have rectangular pupils allowing them to see 320 degrees around their bodies. This enables them to scan the area for potential predators. ✅

Why do Pygmy Goats have shiny/polished horn ends? They are fastidious cleaners and use their horns to preen/clean off dirt from their bodies. This repeated rubbing motion polishes their horns. ✅

As part of this magical hour, the children each spent time petting the playful goats using their sense of touch to feel the goat coats before completing a goat quiz / dot-to-dot colouring challenge.

A rousing thumbs up 👍 to all these talented children! Goat to be proud of yourselves!

21.10.19 - 🎥A MUST SEE FILM CLIP OF NATURE THAT YOU ONLY NORMALLY READ ABOUT IN BOOKS?🎥 There’s plenty of ‘Life on Earth’ for a Common Buzzard & Sir David Attenborough would be so uplifted to see so many transfixed children marvelling at the ground hunting skills of this masterful British hunter.

These birds regularly walk or stand on the ground as they search for reptiles, amphibians (such as frogs and newts), large insects & earthworms. ✅

Farmer John shared one such story about his own lucky viewing when he saw a wild Common Buzzard walking along a stream bank before capturing an unlucky frog 🐸 with his talons! These are multi-talented opportunist birds and this is a key reason why they have established themselves with healthy populations in Sussex and around the country.

Can the majestic predator of our skies, the Common Buzzard, hunt on ground?

Our doting Rocks Park PS children, were in for a very special treat as our wild rescue Common Buzzard called ‘Buzz’ put on a land hunting display which is a key part of their predatory hunting instincts.

Did you know that Buzzards regularly perch on a fence post, dead tree or rock from where they then scan the surrounding ground before either swooping down on or ambushing their prey. ✅

They regularly walk or stand on the ground as they search for reptiles, amphibians (such as frogs and newts), large insects & earthworms. ✅

The children sat awestruck as Great Out-tours instructor Laura (Buzz’s owner) & Farmer John shared lots of fascinating facts about this amazing bird of prey. This was a memorable Buzz tour as the weather conditions were wet. Would he give the children memories never to be forgotten? OHH YES folks!

Check out this amazing picture recall of the transfixing club hour.

17.10.19 - A spectacular countryside colour palette makes ingredients for the best ‘Nature Pie’s’ at Parkside CPS!?

This activity is up in the children’s top three all time fave Autumn activities and gets their eyes 👀 honed on the amazing spectrum of mother nature’s colours this special season creates.

The school grounds are bordered by a diverse mix of native trees & bushes bursting with falling leaf & berry colour!

This activity is all about the wonder of autumn forage. Firstly the children collect up windfall sticks to make the pie shape / slice marks and then the real fun begins....

Using their creativity they seek out different colours and shapes of mother nature’s autumn and then collect them up in volume to form each pie slice.

So who would benefit from these culinary delights? No edible slices for the pupils but many rich pickings for the community of wild birds and mammals that reside around/adjoining the school grounds and so need our help as the cold weather diminishes food supply. So it is a WIN WIN ecosystem supporting activity. 👍 👍

16.10.19 - Angry Weather gives us the opportunity to unleash the wildly popular & educational ‘Bird Bingo’ to this super competitive group of clubbers at Dallington CEPS!!

On very rare occasions we are forced indoors by dramatic weather and this was one such day. No more perfect an hour than to play this amazing wildlife game, whilst floating many and varied bird facts & questions. The children were ‘billiant’ answering many questions correctly as their bingo cards filled in anticipation of winning ‘five in a ine’!!

When that time finally came the screams of “BINGO” from the winning team lifted off the hall roof!!!
