After Schools Clubs in Wealden

The great out-tours bring the wonders of the countryside to the doorstep of primary school children. Via an exciting & curriculum supporting ‘four seasons’ outdoor learning programme, we deliver after school clubs & in-school workshops.

We pride ourselves in creating unforgettable practical experiences of nature in action using the school grounds/surrounds as the teaching ‘stage’. We work closely with the school staff to satisfy key curriculum learning objectives in the subject areas of: science, geography, art & design, music & design & technology. If your school has a Great Out-tours club running, here is a taster of what your children will take part in…

  • Living animal dynamics, including handling/bottle feeding lambs & chicks in spring.
  • Wild produce culinary activities including making Elderflower cordial, Crab Apple jelly, jams & chutneys & crushing/pressing fruits in summer for the freshest juice.
  • Carrying out a variety of countryside surveying methods on nature (with the aid of long duration cameras to bring alive the wildlife whilst school sleeps)!
  • Rural crafts making animal/plant structures/sculptures as well as bird, bat & insect nest boxes, homes & hotels!
  • Exciting individual & team-work based activities to develop self esteem, confidence, independence & practical skills. … plus many other illuminating & fun activities!

26.07.19 - Quacking good duckling art wins the day! WELL DONE TO THIS VERY TALENTED YOUNG LADY.

Our Key Stage 1 dot-to-dot colouring challenge that accompanied The Great Out-tours 'duckling to school' club sessions, brought so much pleasure to many children across our club network.

We had lots & lots of amazingly colourful duck creations using the duckling dot-to-dot outline, but one child from St. Margaret's CEPS - Angmering (Arun region), took art to a WHOLE DIFFERENT LEVEL. Just BILLIANT!!!!!

This child was so transfixed by her meeting/petting/learning about our wild Mallard ducklings, she took home her dot-to-dot challenge and according to mum, worked on it for hours. We can all see that. Hoorah for her!!

Music to our ears and truly representative of what The Great Out-tours stand for.

Sam and Farmer John are SO VERY IMPRESSED with her creative skill and dedication to complete this masterpiece & for this she wins a Great Out-tours T-shirt!!

THOROUGHLY DESERVED, I THINK YOU WILL ALL AGREE! Do post any comments you feel merit this talented achievement!

01.07.19 - ‘Will these wild cuties ‘fit the BILL’???!!!

A ‘quacking’ YES from the Rocks Park Primary after school club???!!!

Woodside Environmental Education Centre is bursting with new life, keeping Farmer John extremely busy nurturing!!!

The week started with our days old Mallard ducklings on tour to Rocks Park Primary after school club. A true visual treat was on display with these adorable bundles of energy and fun.

A pen was set up with a mini pond (grow bag tray) and the ducklings revelled in their stardom, scooting around their play pond and providing a hilarious ‘splashtastic’ for the club children!!!

Each child got to hold, pet & care for a wet little bundle of life with sopping webbed feet, giving a new and very special sensory experience.

Such a highlight this activity, providing unforgettable memories & wildlife learning (completing dot-to-dot challenges [KS1] /quizzes [KS2]), which the children SOOO LOVED!!

Well done Rocks Park!!

28.06.19 - ‘No sound from the railway at Buxted, just ‘quackity-quack, quackity-quack’ at the school!!!??

The week ended on a FLYING HIGH with 30x five day old Mallard ducklings coming to Buxted CEPS.

The children revelled in these adorable bundles of energy and fun. A pen was set up with a mini pond and the ducklings made a BIG SPLASH, soaking in their stardom, scooting around their water playground!! This provided a hilarious visual feast for the club children!!!

Each clubber got to hold, pet & care for a wet little bundle of life with sopping webbed feet, giving a new and very special sensory experience.

This is up in the top three favourite activities for these oh so loyal clubbers. They love the experience and despite it being the end of a week, they dived into their dot-to-dot challenges (KS1) & quizzes (KS2) with their usual enthusiasm.

Here’s an interesting Mallard fact for you: Did you know, the ducklings are ready to fly at 2 months old? They gotta get up in the sky quickly to avoid being predated!!!

Well done Duxted!! Oops typo!!!!!!!

27.06.19 - A QUACKLE of excitement and intrigue as 25x 4 day old wild Mallard ducklings make a splash at Dallington CEP after school club?!

Farmer John has been so busy these last few days at Woodside Environmental Education Centre (Horam), rearing days old Mallard ducklings for our burgeoning network of after school clubs and care homes.

Due to the very warm & sunny afternoon, these were the youngest aged ducklings EVER brought to this school. They welcomed the comical and characterful ducklings for a very happy hour of splashtastic viewing, petting our wet little bundles of fun and getting used to the feel of webbed feet in hand!!

Farmer John wove oodles of unusual and amazing facts about these extraordinary Mallards and the children were most attentive.

Here’s an interesting one for you: Did you know that immediately after hatch, mother duck leads her ducklings straight to water. Once there the ducklings have to find all their own food. THESE LITTLE creatures are very tough and amazing foragers!!!

The session ended with the children eagerly completing a dot-to-dot challenge (KS1) & quiz (KS2) and proudly showing their answers to Farmer John.

You should all be so proud of yourselves Pad-Dallington!!!

26.06.19 - “For in fact these birds in so many words said, The best in town, the best, the best
The best in town!”

HOORAY, wild Mallard ducklings come to Parkside CP after school club!!!!

On a perfect sunny afternoon, Farmer John brought in 30x wild 3 day ducklings, he is rearing at Woodside Environmental Education Centre (Horam). Due to lovely warm afternoon this is the youngest clutch of ducklings brought in to a school club.

The adoring child faces so tell the story of the magical hour! These are very special pictures for your album!

As is tradition, Farmer John wove lots of interesting Mallard facts into the session, which the children carefully listened to before taking home a duck qot-to-dot challenge (KS1) & quiz (KS2) to impress their families with their new found learning.

Here’s one for you. Did you know that Mallard Ducks can fly for 800 miles in one non-stop flight!! WOWW!!!

24.06.19 - ‘Knock, knock, knocking on Garden’s Door’!!!???

Rocking to the sound of wooden drums at Rocks Park Primary School after school club??!! It’s the wildly popular ‘Flower Bashing’ nature art with a musical twist!!!

Intrigued? So you should be. Set within the school grounds, this activity is called ‘Flower Bashing’ and plays to nature’s amazing plant colour spectrum and how they can be used as a dye for paper art.

This activity truly fires the exploring/foraging talents of the children.

The activity involved a sheet of art paper, a sheet of kitchen roll and a full round length of wood.

Part 1: In teams the children were tasked with heading out and picking flowers and plant leaves of all colours / textures.

Part 2: Once the children had collected a wide array of nature colours, they took up their art paper and drew a large bubble letter of their first name initial.

Part 3: Selecting from their colourful forage items, they placed each flower/leaf onto their bubble letter. Then they’ve carefully placed the kitchen roll on top and using their wooden ‘bashers’, pummelled the sandwiched flowers/plants leaving a pressed colour imprint beneath!!

This activity is great for the artistic mind and is very much a journey of experiment & discovery. Some plant colours and outlines transferred beautifully onto the art paper, others left a smudge of colour. Some flower colours such as pink, turned blue on the paper after bashing. All in all a transfixing journey of floral magic!

The club children loved this one & whilst all around was the sound of knocking wood, the artistic results of nature’s palette were amazing and all unique / very special to the artist!!!

Check out the picture gallery for very special moments of this illuminating activity.
