September is an important month for children, it’s also a BIGGY for our wild birds too??
🐦 Did you know......? All birds moult.
What does this mean?
Moulting is a process of shedding and regrowing feathers. Adult birds shed their worn out feathers each year, following the breeding season. The youngest months old birds are losing their first feathers and moulting into their adult coats.
Feathers wear out during a bird's busy year. Flying, rubbing against neighbouring feathers or trees, general weakening due to exposure to sun, along with parasites, such as feather lice, all cause damage to feathers.
They grow new, strong, warm feathers to see them through the winter.
🦆 When do the UK’s wild birds choose to moult?
Many (but not all) birds shed their feathers in August & September.
👂 Have you heard?
JUST NOW, in your garden, park or on countryside walks, there AREN’T many birds singing?
Why?
Fascinating fact....the birds are just keeping a low profile while they undergo a late summer moult, shedding their tired and bedraggled feathers to replace them with strong and glossy new ones!
🧢 Put a feather in your cap?
RIGHT NOW, if you go on a 🚶🏿♀️👨🦽walk 🚶♂️🚶🏿♀️, or head out to your garden, you will very likely see feathers lying on the ground. Look closely under trees and bushes and you may well find some really special and COLOURFUL feathers, BOTH large and small!
We are going to help you place a FEATHER to a BIRD!
🧩 Our challenge to you?
- ALL YOU NEED TO DO, IS TELL US WHICH FAMILIAR WILD BRITISH BIRDS, these SIX feathers come from.
- 🖐🤘🏽👆🏿 In the coming week, two more different & familiar bird feather pics will be posted, & with these will conclude the ‘BIRDS OF A FEATHER’ picture challenge.
- ✍️ Lodge your answers (quoting the feather numbers), via a Facebook ‘comment’ or in ‘messenger’.
- It's not too late to take part!
