Through our special partnership agreement with
Shark Trust , we have
HATCHED AN EASTER TREAT FOR YOU ALL!?
GO GREAT OUT-TOURS and hunt for shark, ray & skate eggcases (AKA 'Mermaid's Purses')!?
IT'S GREAT FUN AND YOU ARE VERY LIKELY TO FIND SOME!
Some sharks , rays and all skates, reproduce by laying eggs in the sea
. These are surrounded by a tough leathery capsule that protects the embryo as it develops inside. After several months these are ready to hatch, and a fully-formed shark or skate will emerge.
Once empty, the eggcases (or Mermaid’s Purses) OFTEN wash up on the beach.
Since 2003 Shark Trust have been running a 'Citizen Scientist' Great Eggcase Hunt, encouraging us all to go down to the beach and
for empty eggcases.
Such finds help indicate species presence and diversity. By recording your finds with Shark Trust, you're supporting them discover more about egg-laying species in our sea waters.
In close collaboration with Shark Trust, we have designed 'The Great Eggcase Hunt Bundle', transporting children, or adults in care settings, to a magical marine kingdom!
This bundle will ignite a spirit of curiosity, exploration, discovery and inspiration, as well as helping to protect the most revered and mysterious fish of our oceans.
Across the Easter school holidays (until
April 2021), WE ARE GIVING AWAY 'The Great Eggcase Hunt Activity Bundle'.
