September is an important month for children, it’s also a BIGGY for our wild birds too??

🐦 Did you know......? All birds moult.

What does this mean?

Moulting is a process of shedding and regrowing feathers. Adult birds shed their worn out feathers each year, following the breeding season. The youngest months old birds are losing their first feathers and moulting into their adult coats.

Feathers wear out during a bird's busy year. Flying, rubbing against neighbouring feathers or trees, general weakening due to exposure to sun, along with parasites, such as feather lice, all cause damage to feathers.

They grow new, strong, warm feathers to see them through the winter.

πŸ¦† When do the UK’s wild birds choose to moult?

Many (but not all) birds shed their feathers in August & early September.

πŸ‘‚ Have you heard?

JUST NOW, in your garden, park, or on countryside walks, there AREN’T many birds singing?

Why?

Fascinating fact....the birds are just keeping a low profile while they undergo a late summer moult, shedding their tired and bedraggled feathers to replace them with strong and glossy new ones!

🧒  Put a feather in your cap?
