What is World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD)❓

This special day is an annual awareness-raising campaign, highlighting the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats.

📋 Case study: Our beloved Swallows.

🚶🏾‍♀️👩🏾‍🦽If you go for a walk in the British Countryside this weekend, you will no doubt see our beloved migratory birds, Swallows, wheeling and warbling in the skies above.  They arrive in April and May, following their long migration flight from South Africa.😲

To get here, they travel across the Sahara into 🇵🇹 Morocco, up through eastern 🇪🇸Spain, across the Pyrenees, along western 🇫🇷 France, before making the final channel crossing to 🇬🇧 Great Britain.

😲🌍 WOWW, what a journey!

⏱Migrating Swallows cover 200 miles a day, mainly during daylight, at speeds of 17-22 miles per hour.  Despite accumulating some fat reserves before crossing large areas such as the Sahara Desert, migration is a hazardous time and many birds die from starvation, exhaustion and in storms ⛈.

💦 📌 Each year WMBD select a 'central concern' theme for their campaign. This year it is WATER.

Water is fundamental to life on our planet. The vast majority of migratory birds rely on aquatic ecosystems during their life cycles.

Unfortunately, aquatic ecosystems are becoming increasingly threatened around the world, and so are the migratory birds that depend on them.
